Drinking water supply and sanitation in India continues to be inadequate, despite longstanding efforts by various levels of government and communities to improve the access and affordability of safe drinking water. Clean water is directly associated with proper nutrition; intestinal inflammation and infection due to drinking water contaminated with worms, parasites, viruses, and bacteria leads to partial or complete mal-absorption of essential nutrients and calories, in addition to life-threatening dehydration. These complications can cause detrimental, lifelong reductions in physical development and cognitive potential. TCI prioritizes research and technology development around clean water, access to toilets and nutrition outcomes, and behavior changes that can lead to increased absorption of nutrients and improved metabolic utilization.

AguaClara is a Cornell Technology used for providing clean drinking water to rural communities through the use of village level water purification plants. Piloted in Honduras, the initiative in India has two components; a filtration unit using the Low Flow Stacked Rapid Sand Filter (LFSRSF) and a chemical doser controller which ensures accurate doses of critical chemicals for treating and disinfecting water. The LRSRSF and chemical dose unit are placed appropriately within the water supply system provided by the Indian government. Work is in progress at two villages, Gufu and Rohne, in the Khunti district of Jharkhand, with scale-up in three additional villages expected.
